What is scientific notation?
Scientific notation is a number display system to show too large and too small numbers in human-readable form. it is also known as scientific form, scientific index form, or stand form in the United Kingdom. Base ten notation is commonly used by scientists, engineers, and mathematicians because it simplifies some arithmetic operations.
General scientific notation standard form is: m × 10n
Where n is an integer, coefficient m is non-zero real number. Usually between one and 10 in absolute value.
Mostly There is three way to show scientific notation.
The integer n is known as the exponent and the real number m is known as significand or mantissa. Mantissa is the classical name of the fractional part of a common logarithm. If the number is less than zero then the minus sign follows m as normal decimal notation. But m is the absolute value between one and ten in normalized notation
Real Number | Scientific Notation | E Notation | Standard Form |
0.00000526 | 5.26 × 10-6 | 5.26e-6 | 5.26 × 10-6 |
385644865 | 3.85644865 × 108 | 3.85644865e8 | 3.85644865 × 108 |
-25486542 | -2.5486542 × 107 | -2.5486542e7 | -2.5486542 × 107 |
Mostly There are three ways to show scientific notation.
Any actual number can be written in the form of m × 10n in many ways. Like 730 can be written as 7.3×102 or 73×101 or 730×100.
In normalized notation ("standard form" in the UK), we can change the value of exponent n, but the value of m is an absolute value that remains between one and ten only. (1 ≤ |m| < 10). So like 730 can be written as 7.3×102 in normalized notation. This form is used to compare numbers easily. Numbers with larger exponents are bigger than those with smaller exponents, and the number of order-of-magnitude separators of numbers is estimated by deducting the exponents.
Engineering notation (named “ENG” on the scientific calculator) is different from normalized notation, where exponent notation is the multiplication of three. The absolute value of m is in the range 1 ≤ |m| < 1000 instead of 1 ≤ |m| < 10. Engineering notation is hardly called scientific notation. 73568 can be written as 73.568 × 103 in engineering notation.
All calculators and computer programming languages mostly use e notation to display too large a number or too small a number. In general scientific notation, exponents are displayed in the base of 10. In contrast, E notation uses the letter ‘e’ or ‘E’ to represent 10n. 5.0235 × 103 normalize notation written as 5.0235E3 as E notation.
If you convert a number in normalized notation, move the decimal point of the number till there is only one nonzero digit remaining. Consider the non-zero digit as m, which is greater than or equal to one and less than 10 (1 ≤ |m| < 10). The number of moved decimal places is considered as n. And if you convert numbers in engineering notation, m should be greater than or equal to one and less than 1000 (1 ≤ |m| < 1000).
If we move to decimal left direction, then n is a positive number. If we move in the decimal right direction, then n is a negative number.
So scientific notation is m × 10n.
To convert a number in e notation, replace base 10 with an E or e letter.
Electrons are negative charged particles in atoms. it's actually weight 9.11 × 10-28 grams
Protons are positvely charged particles. it's weight is equal to 1830 times weight of electron.it's actually weight is 1.67 × 10-24 grams.
Earth is almost largest planet in our solar system. it's weight is 13 thousand, 170 billion trillion pounds.it's atomic mass weight in scientific notation is 1.317e22.
Distance between solar and earth is 93.821 million mi. in scientific notation, it is 9.3821e7.
